Social Studies 6 Project

Social Studies Project: Due May 11, 2015

You are the pharoah or ruler of ancient Egypt or Nubia.

Option 1: Create laws to help rule your kingdom and make it profitable.

- Include laws on:

     Taxation

       - List of Taxed items

       - State how much each item is taxed

       - State how the government will use taxes

   Protecting private property

       - laws against theft

       - consequences of breaking laws

Regulation of trade; both domestic and foreign

        - what can be traded?

        - what currency is used?

        - who is allowed to trade in your country?

Develop and explain methods to deal with the problems associated with life on the Nile River

        - excessive flooding

        - droughts

Option 2: You are a royal cartographer for the Pharoah. The Pharoah has decided to create a new city dedicated to himself/herself and has given you the task of drawing and planning the new city. The city must contain a tomb "fit for a king" as well as a major temple dedicated to the god, Amon. The temple must  be the focal point of the city.  Around the temple you must plan sites for markets and trade. Living quarters for all levels of your society.  Develop a system that will bring water to the city in the event of a drought and develop ways to prevent excessive flooding. The city must also have a way to defend itself against attack from foreign lands and be able to be secured at night so designing a system of defense is critical.  The city should also contain obelisks dedicated to the pharoah; adored with pictographs of his/her amazing deeds.

You can create a three-dimensional model of the city using clay, styrofoam, or anything else that you desire.  Label each part of the city so that the "pharoah" can easily see each part of this glorious new city.

                                                                                                                                                       Or

You can draw the city on a piece of poster board.  The drawing should also contain labels of all the pertinent parts of the city and it should be colorful so the "pharoah" can get an authentic picture of this glorious new city.

Opition 3: The pharoah has promoted you to the position of royal tomb builder.  You must build the pharoah's tomb and begin to plan what objects will be placed in the tomb when the pharoah dies.

You can design and build a three dimensional pyramid and fill it with items the pharoah will need in the after life.  Label each part of the tomb and label each item being placed in the tomb. Provide the pharoah with a list of the items with an explanation as to why that item should be placed in the tomb upon his/her death.

Mary Poppins Extra Credit Project

Open to all ILA Classes

Option 1: Write a critical review of the St. Rose production of Mary Poppins. (10 points)

 a) Comment on the staging of the production:

             - lighting

             - sound

             - sets

             - music

 b) Critique the acting.

What actor(s) did an exceptional job?

How was the singing and dancing?

What aspect of the play was the most memorable and why?

 c) State whether you would recommend the play to others. Explain why you would or would not recommend it.

Option 2 - Read the book Mary Poppins by P. L. Tavers and write a book report.  (10 points)

       The book report must include:

                                      a) a list of the main characters

                                      b) the conflict that must be overcome

                                      c) the climax

                                      d) the resolution

As part of the conclusion for the book report, state whether you would recommend the book. Give valid reason as to why you would or would not recommend the book.

Option three: Write an essay comparing and contrasting either the book with the Disney movie of Mary Poppins or the St. Rose production of Mary Poppins. (15 points)

Socials Studies 6 - Extra Credit Assignments

Social Studies 6 - Extra Credit - Due November 10, 2014 Late extra credit projects will not be accepted.

Option 1 (10 pts.)

Create a timeline that indicates five major historical events from Chapter 2 of the social studies textbook.  The finished timeline should be dimensional and colorful.  The events should be clearly labeled with a brief explanation of the events historical importance.

Option 2 (15 pts.)

Build a diorama of an early farming village. The diorama must include: Shelters, fields, and tools.  Add captions that indicate the purpose of each section of the scene. Finally write a brief narrative, no more than a paragraph, that explains the scene and how early people lived in these communities.

Option 3 (20 pts.)

Write a one to two page summary of how human life changed form the end of the last Ice Age to the building of the first cities.  The narrative should be descriptive and should utilize some of the key terms found in Chapter 2 of the textbook.  Use facts from your reading to help write the narrative and you may also do research to add more information to the paper if you choose.  Make sure that you do not "cut and paste" any information from the internet and properly credit all sources used.

All projects are due no later than Monday, November 10, 2014.  Projects can be submitted earlier but no project will be accepted later than the due date of November 10, 2014.
