2nd Grade Soc St. Family Project
- Project is due March 11, 2013. Late projects will be deducted 5 points for every day late.
- There are two components to the project. BOTH must be completed.
- This project is for the students to complete. Parents can help, but please allow your child to use their knowledge and creativity to complete the project.
Part 1- Family Tree
You are going to create your family tree. This must be displayed on poster board. Be as creative and as artistic as you would like. You may trace your family tree back as far as you desire but you must at least include 4 generations (yourself, your parents, your grandparents, and your great grandparents).
Requirements:
- Must be on poster board
- 4 generations
- Include names of family members
- Be creative and neat.
Part 2- Interview
Please interview a family member from a different generation. Please try to interview someone in a generation very different from yours (grandparents, great grandparents, great aunts, or great uncles etc). The purpose of this project is for you to not only become aware of your family and your history, but also to identify the cultural differences from the past to the present. In class we have discussed the differences in transportation, farming and communication over the years. The questions and the answers you get to the questions are going to help you to connect what you have learned in class to real life!
Requirements:
- You must ask at least 10 questions. (Feel free to ask more!)
- You must write the answers down in complete sentences.
- Your final draft that you hand in should have the questions and the answers written.
- You may type or hand write the questions and answers.

Behavior Plan
Classroom Rules:
The second grade has worked together in creating a set of rules for our classroom. The rules are as follows:
1. Respect yourself and others.
2. Respect everyone’s property.
3. Raise a quiet hand.
4. Stay in your seat.
5. Keep your hands to yourself.
6. Try your best.
7. Follow directions.
Individual Rewards:
When students show they are doing their best job to follow our classroom rules they will receive tickets. These tickets are kept in an envelope in the classroom. At the end of each trimester, students will be able to trade their good behavior tickets for prizes. Students will also be able to earn a shooting star in the hallway for going above and beyond to help others. An example would be helping another student clean up without being asked.
Consequences:
If a student chooses not to follow one of our rules, they will first get a post it warning stuck on their desk. If the undesirable behavior continues they will receive a check on their post it for each instance.
- 1 check= 5 minutes sitting at recess
- 2 checks= 1 ticket owed and a note home and 5 minutes sitting at recess
- 3 or more checks= 2 tickets owed, a note home and a recess detention the next day
* Malicious destruction of school or student property, causing physical harm to any student or adult, or blatant disrespect of authority will be brought to the attention of the principal immediately.
Group Reward System:
When the second grade class as a whole is on task and making good choices a pom-pom will be placed in our good behavior container. Once the container is filled to the top with pom-poms students will be rewarded as a group (ex. a movie, extra recess time, etc).
2nd Grade Spelling Contracts
Each week every student will be responsible for choosing and completing spelling activities from the following list. Each student must earn 25 points per week. Students must choose at least one activity from the 10 or 15 point category. If you do more than 25 points you will receive extra credit. Work is to be done at home throughout the week and must be completed by Friday. Activities should be completed in "Sp." notebooks. Anything done on a computer should be brought to school in "H" folders. Happy Spelling!
5 POINT ACTIVITIES
- Draw and color a picture of any three spelling words and write the word underneath.
- Write your spelling words in ABC order.
- Write your spelling words and give a rhyming word for each.
- Write or type each spelling word 3x each.
- Write each word with the letters scrambled and have a family member unscramble to find the spelling word.
10 POINT ACTIVITIES
- Write your spelling words and give a synonym for each.
- Write your spelling words and give an antonym for each.
- Cut letters out of a magazine or news paper to spell each spelling word. Use a glue stick to glue the letters in your notebook to spell each word.
- Create a word search using all of your spelling words for the week. You may do this on a computer and print it out, or you may do this in your notebook.
15 POINT ACTIVITIES
- Write a sentence using each spelling word and underline the word. Sentences must be at least five words long.
- Look up each spelling word in the dictionary. Write the word and definition.
- Write a story using at least 5 spelling words. Your story must have a beginning, middle and end. Underline your spelling words.
* A spelling pretest will be given every Monday. Children that score 100% on the pretest will be exempt from the test on Friday. Those children will be given a challenge activity while the test is being given.

Second Grade Grading Policy
Second Grade students receive grades of O, G, S, N, on their report card per guidelines set by the Diocese of Trenton.
These are the score equivelents for Genesis and Report Cards:
O = 100-93
G = 92-85
S = to 84-76
N = to 75-70
*On assignments students may receive an O+ for outstanding work which will be equal to 100. They can also receive a G+ which equals a 92 and an S+ which equals an 84. These grades will show as O, G, S, N on their report card.

Homework will be posted on the school website every week. The second grade students are responsible for bringing their homework home along with the right books to study. I will be making sure they have the right books for the first month. I will be signing their homework books everyday to make sure it is written correctly. The spelling words will also be on the school website every week. Their work should be independent with as little help from you as possible. This year is when they should start their independence and learning to be responsible for themselves.

Dear Parents,
I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Miss Kelly and I am very excited to be your child’s teacher this year. This is my first year teaching second grade at Mother Teresa Regional School. I spent the past four years at MTRS teaching PreK3. I am super excited to have landed in second grade this year! In 2005, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Education and Social Studies from Caldwell College. Prior to joining the faculty at Mother Teresa Regional I taught PreK3 at Red Oak School in Middletown.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child in reaching his or her full potential. We will have many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow in the days ahead.
Second grade is a very exciting year. Your second grader will learn to become more independent and will be responsible for doing their best work everyday. Second graders will also be receiving the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Another exciting event in second grade is the May Crowning.
