WHAT’S NEW IN THE ART ROOM?
Hi All,
The older students have had a great time exploring techniques of various artists. Last weeks lesson on Pablo Picasso provided each child with the opportunity to sketch each other as they took turns being the model for everyone to draw and then "abstract" them the way Picasso would.
This week, the students will be introduced to Post Impressionist, Paul Cezanne, who is best known for his use of light and color on still life such as fruit and vases. Everyone will replicate this style of art by sketching fruit and then painting the subject matter. As always, students are required to record the artist biography and history and technique in their art journals as a part of their final grades.
The younger children have assisted me in preparing for the holidays by creating festive decorations such as, ornaments, handmade snowflakes and santa faces.
Happy Creating!

Students Learn about Jackson Pollack

I Made My Own Twin!

October 6, 2011
Hi All,
So much has been happening in art class this week. Our older students have submitted their Braque inspired Collages for their first grades as well as their art journals. If they did not hand in a journal entry, their final project grade was affected. They were also introduced to this weeks artist, Kelly Rae Roberts. She is an artist who creates inspirational paintings using acrylics, oils, colaage and ink. HOMEWORK REMINDER: Each student was informed that they are to research and bring in a quote that they would like to incorporate into their painting next week. They should also have an idea of the subject matter that they would like to focus on.
All students just completed beautiful Get Well Soon cards for a special little girl who is currently at St. Judes Children's Hospital in Memphis , TN. She will be so thrilled to open so many beautiful gifts from our school. The children were so helpful that we decided to have an "Art Auction" at our Christmas Bazarre in December and have all proceeds benefit the hospital. Further details will follow.
Pre K-5 will be creating their own "Springy" people this week. This is a fun project in which each child draws a person, decorates them with yarn hair and other materials and attaches them to paper-made springs. Let the bouncing begin!
That's all for now. Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Creating!

September 27, 2011
Hi All,
I hope everyone had a great weekend.
Grades 7 & 8th completed their newspaper collage portraits today and also handed in their art journal for their first grades. Some students were given extentions to Thursday due to absence, so please do not forget to bring your projects to me. The remainder of the students watched a brief demostration on video, then experienced the technique of Jackson Pollock's "drip technique". They were then asked to record this lesson in their art journals.
The next project will be the same for all of the grades this week. We will be creating cards and/or handmade presents for children at the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. After all have been completed, I will have them shipped to the hospital directly by next week.
I look forward to another great week!
Happy Creating!

Carolyn Dempsey, Art
Hello, my name is Carolyn Dempsey and I am your child's art teacher. I have been teaching elementary and middle school art for over twenty years. I graduated from Brevard College in 1975 with an A.A. degree in Fine Arts concentration. After graduation I attended the Art Students League in New York City concentrating in life drawing and painting, exhibiting and selling work in local galleries. I then decided to switch gears and pursue art education. I attended Monmouth University (then Monmouth College) taking art education classes, contemporary crafts, and fine arts. I taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help for 13 years and began my art teaching career at Mother Teresa Regional School when they opened in 2006. In addition to teaching art I held the position of Art Director for Boys/Girls Club of America. (1978-1980) .I have also aided in both Pre-K and Kindergarten, as well as substituted for all grades. We have a wonderful art room at Mother Teresa and the students and myself are very appreciative of OUR ART ROOM!
